The flattened top of the head is based upon the ancient habit of snuffing cohoba where a shallow dished top of the head was used as a stand to burn the cohoba mixture. This fascinating and very distinctive looking piece was produced by the indigenous Tains Caribbean people of the Dominican Republic for early tourists.
