Frank Bowling Cover Girl Extra Large Print

Frank Bowling Cover Girl Extra Large Print Cover Girl is painted on one of a number of pre-prepared canvases Bowling made featuring a silkcreen of ‘Bowling’s variety store’, the shop his mother owned in Guyana. In the foreground, Bowling painted the model Hiroko Matsumoto as she appeared on the front cover of The Observer Magazine, March 1966, wearing a Pierre Cardin dress with a Vidal Sassoon haircut. By using both these images in the same work, Bowling blended his past in Guyana with an emblem of cutting edge London culture at the time of painting.
