The original Lehrter Bahnhof (station) was heavily damaged in World War II and later demolished. The area around the bridge was the scene of intense fighting during the Battle of Berlin in April 1945, as Soviet forces advanced towards the Reichstag building. The bridge itself survived the war due to a partially failed demolition attempt by German defenders, allowing Soviet troops to cross.
