FIRM comfort
Bewertet am: Jan 8, 2001
I bought the Selle Italia Flite saddle two years ago as a replacement for the stock saddle on my Marinoni road racing bike. My saddle is the basic, plain jane, unpadded version. When I first got the saddle, I was impressed by how extremely light it was, and how attractive and well made it appeared to be. I was also struck by how narrow and "firm" (rock hard, actually) the saddle was. I found my self wondering if this thing was going to split me right up the middle! Once I got the saddle on the bike, I was very pleasantly surprised. The minimal amount of padding on this saddle is placed in just the right spots, and once the saddle is adjusted correctly, it's quite comfortable with a good pair of padded cycling shorts. The narrowness of the saddle turned out to be a plus, too. I found pedaling to be easier with less saddle to hamper my leg movements.
My first long ride with the saddle (85 miles) was quite pleasant for about 75 miles; the last 10 miles were a bit painful. After owning the saddle for about a year I was able to cover up to 100 miles in complete comfort. In conversations with other cyclists, I've heard that narrow saddles like this work best on road racing bicycles with a fairly bent over riding position, while wider saddles are better for bikes with a more upright riding position. My own experience bears this out; I have an all-leather Brooks B.17 on my mountain/commute bike, and what works on one bike does not work on the other.
For the committed road cyclist who races or logs a lot of miles of fast fitness riding, this saddle is superb. The light weight and narrow profile are just what this kind of rider needs, and the minimal to non-existent padding are just right for a well conditioned cyclist wearing a good pair of padded shorts. A more casual cyclist would probably not appreciate this saddle, and would be happier with a gel padded version of the Selle Italia Flite, or with a wider model.
