Some Caveats
Bewertet am: Feb 12, 2009
Fazit: After researching DVR options with ATSC reception, Philips is about the only reasonably priced DVR with ATSC (3576H is newer). If something besides Philips becomes available, consider it instead.
This recorder suffered in the early stages, but recent firmware changes have helped. However, even the latest firmware lacks in features that should be standard on an ATSC/QAM/DVR/DVD recorder.
I use this device for free Over-The-Air, ATSC (digital) television reception and DVD playback. I record to the Hard Drive daily. I have not used the HDMI output, only the NTSC. I have only used the stereo, analog audio and not the digital.
Please know that the ATSC tuner does have HD capabilities, but the recorders (DVD and Hard Disk) do not. It will be standard definition.
I have recorded around 60 shows now and have lost a couple. Usually, there is only a few seconds of video and then it quits. This could be a problem with the broadcast and is not necessarily the fault of the recorder. The record has been fairly reliable.
A modern day ATSC tuner and hard drive recorder should be able to use programming guides that broadcasters are required to sent out. Even a cheap Set-Top-Box does that. This expensive box does not.
The menus are not intuitive or simple. One must go into the Setup menu to control just about everything.
After a scan, I found that I could delete the channels I did not like, but I could not delete the subchannels. Also, one must toggle between the analog (NTSC) tuner and the digital (NTSC) tuner.
The DVD player has some flaws as well. It handles some rough disks alright, but there are certain disks where the remote commands are locked out. I have had a couple of disks were once the DVD is playing, the PLAY button no longer works. If one pauses the movie, there is no way to start it again!
To make things more frustrating, I've yet to find a universal remote that works with it. Even a Philips brand URC!
The newest model is actually the 3576H which has different firmware. I bought a 3576H but recieved a 3575H. Because the 3575 had the latest firmware, I thought I would keep it. I'm regretting that decision.
Conclusion, it works, but could be better.
