Nice cheap recorder

Fazit: It's a good value for ~$200. It handles both DVD R and DVD-R, have multiple inputs, does playback and recording well, good menu and remote response.
I wanted a DVD recorder that can also dub as a progressive scan DVD player, and I got exactly what I wanted. The specs listed on Epinion is not exactly accurate. It has 2 inputs on the back, S-Video/RCA's, and one input on the front, S-Video/RCA. I don't think it does zoom on DVD playback but I could've missed it. DVD playback works as expected. JP-1 remote code was easily found on Yahoo group, even though I had to switch to remote address 2 for some reason to work with my URC-6131, but it didn't take much time playing with it to find out. Remote control was pretty responsive.
I did a little recording using the included DVD-RAM, and it worked flawlessly. And it was easy. On-screen menu selection was pretty clear for me to poke around without having to read the manual much. My recording source is DirecTV Tivo, HBO's Six Feet Under, about the best picture quality broadcast can offer, and at SP (2hr/disk) I couldn't tell the difference. I'm currently archiving a series of shows of 15 minutes each every week in LP mode (4 hour per disc) on a DVD+R, quality is still very good, comparable to the best I can get a VHS tape. Editing the titles of each episode was pretty easy also.
Since my home theater receiver is a little old, not having a full set of S-video inputs, I took advantage of this DVD recorder's multiple inputs, and re-routed my home theater system through it. It doesn't do S-Video pass through when it's off, so I have to turn it on to watch TV. It does component up-convert, meaning I could also watch the same thing in 480p through the component connection in real time. When up-converted, the color seems a little darker/redder, and sudden switches in scenes (especially strong in cartoons) show artifacts during transition. The biggest turn-off for component up-convert is that I lose the extra info in the video stream, such as closed caption and XDS, my TV can display what show is on. So I'm back on S-video, doesn't lose anything.
For ~$200, this is a good value.
