Great photos, but at a price.

Fazit: Buy this camera for consistent good quality images, but be prepared to invest in good quality NiMH batteries and a charger.
I have had my Photosmart camera for about two years now and I have been amazed by the quality of product from a reasonably priced camera. The zoom lens and flash is excellent and the software gives good quality images. However, there is a frustrating downside, which I have only recently got to grips with and which I want to pass on to others.
Digital cameras, and HP photosmarts in particular, produce great photos but they are power hungry. If you accept this and appreciate that you need to think about batteries as an important part of your photography kit, then you will be able to benefit from digital's advantages. Otherwise you had better forget it.
When you press the fire button on a film camera there is a click and a little whirl, all the power has to do is open a shutter for a pre-determined time and then wind the film on. Power consumption: one thousandth of a watt. A digital camera has to do MUCH more (I wont bore you) and it takes a LOT more power. If you buy a Photosmart you will also need (probably) 2 x 4 high power NiMH batteries. Forget NiCads, Akaline or acid, they just wont do the job. You need 2,000 mAHr minimum and a timer/temperature controlled charger. This will cost you about $50 (#35) but without it you will be constantly running out of batteries.
Believe me, it is worth it. When I look back on my old film photos, I realise my success rate was about 20%; with the Photosmart it is nearer 90%. It really is worth the money, time and effort.
