Superb but has sync issue with workaround.

Fazit: This is superb product provided you use it as outlined in this review.
This is a superb product well suited to a variety of uses. I gambled on purchasing this product for home theater use and almost lost. There is one serious flaw with the product that happens to have a satisfactory though somewhat dumb workaround.
I will focus on the use of this projector in the context of a home theater, since some of you may be considering this projector for such use because of its specifications.
Yes, given the projectors resolution and support for HDMI, one might suspect the 5100MP would provide stellar results.
And it does, provided you sort out its flaws. The biggest issue is image tearing. At first, I was almost at the point of sending the unit back when I was initially unable to get the unit to display any video content (analog or digital) without image tearing (horizontal split in image due to two different frames being displayed on current frame).
I stumbled on the source of the problem by accident. The projector will NEVER sync correctly to an output device if it is turned on after the projector. You must first turn on your video output device (DVD player, PC), then the 5100MP for it to sync correctly. The tearing problem simply goes away if you do this.
To obtain optimal color/contrast/gray level, you must drive the device with a DVI source that has been adapted to an HDMI connector that is then connected to the projectors HDMI port.
NVidia (7xxx series) cards are well suited for this type of use since some cards provide HiDef settings also, though you will want to drive the projector at its native 1400x1050 resolution.
With the arrangement described above, the projector delivers astounding color and resolution from HiDef sources, since the graphics card and associated PC hardware will nicely scale and adjust the image for display. The only issue you will notice is very modest color banding on some CG generated content.
You could spend several thousand dollars on custom gear and not replicate the quality of this arrangement.
My specific gear consists of an HP s3020 PC having a half height NVidia express 7200 fitted with a DVI to HDMI adapter and projected onto a fairly good quality motorized 8' wide screen. This makes for a rather attractive, quiet, and super cost effective scan converter the equal of ridiculously priced alternatives. Not to mention the facility to output 5.1 digital audio without re-encoding (using WinDVD).
The output qualify can best be described as REMARKABLE. DVD's and HiDef broadcasts are superbly rendered (invest in a decent screen).
This config was arrived at after much tinkering. You WILL be disappointed with analog sources and a non-HDMI output source. And remember the sync issues. It's a dumb problem that happens to have a simple fix.
