Canon G9: Don't buy me!

Fazit: For the price, you are better off spending a little more on a true SLR, or a lot less on a point and shoot.
I purchased the Canon G9 2.5 months ago, I have taken pictures on multiple settings and it is an inferior product that takes average pictures. I had a Canon PowerShot S70 for about 5 years until I broke it. It would have cost $145 to fix so i decided I should just purchase a new camera.
I loved the S70. When you look at photos taken with this camera, they look like they were professionally taken. I had many vacation photos blown up and displayed in my home and they look beautiful. The clarity and the lighting the camera captured revealed a picture that displayed what I saw with my eyes. I thought that 5 years and lots of megapixals later, that the G9 would have been even better, but the G9 does not have the same picture taking capability. The pictures taken with the G9 look like they were taken with a point and shoot camera.
What does this mean? If you are taking a picture of a group of people, they are unnaturally lit, while the background is unnaturally darkened. This is okay when taking photos of people, but when taking vacation photos, or most recently, taking pictures at the Macy's day parade, this is not a good thing. The camera chooses what is the focus of the picture, and instead of taking in the whole seen, lights what it feels is the focus. That could be the person standing in front of me, instead of the float that is behind them, or highlighting a beach umbrella, when I am trying to photograph someone surfing... Furthermore many pictures are grainy, so eventhough it is 12.1 megapixals, it doesn't matter, because the original picture quality is poor, so blowing up a picture taken in this manner, just makes it look worse. I am sorry I am now stuck with this camera, don't make my mistake. Spend a little more and go with a real SLR, or spend a lot less and just buy a point and shoot camera.
Additionally, the shutter speed is very slow, as it was with the S70. The G9 has a feature that lessens the picture quality but increases the shutter speed. This setting is not beneficial at all, since the picture quality is so poor, it looks like the picture was taken with a disposable camera. Both cameras also take very poor night time pictures. You may want to look into this when buying any Canon camera. They both took poor night time scene pictures, and average night time people pictures.
I know the G9 sound impressive, but it is not.
