A spectacular compact notebook
Bewertet am: Okt 23, 2008
Fazit: Very good product for the money.
I have had my Asus eee 701 for a little less than a year now, having purchased it at the beginning of 2008. I was looking for a mini-PC to use on the road. I wanted and needed something that could keep me in touch with email and the internet, but was light and compact.
This fit the bill perfectly. It is some of the best money I've ever spent.
Not only is it light at 2 lbs., but it's very compact. I could fit it in a largish purse, but I choose to carry it in my tote bag along with my knitting.
I've been making a lot of trips to a nearby university hospital this past year with my mom, and discovered that the medical campus had wireless access. The Asus eee has outstanding wireless reception and time spent in waiting rooms passed quickly as long as I could read and send email, and check my RSS reader.
The amusing thing about this subnotebook was that it was quite the attention grabber. Invariably someone sitting nearby would ask questions about it. When my mom was hospitalized this summer, I was at the hospital around the clock, and kept family members updated frequently via email. We also used the eee's webcam to send photos. While sitting in the hospital's public spaces, I would often look up to find a little crowd had gathered around me. I must have given the name and model number out to at least 20 people, along with price points and retailers. (Asus should pay me a commission, I've "sold" a dozen of these at least!)
I regularly carry it with me wherever I go now and it is infinitely handy. At my mother's apartment (she does not have internet access) I can get a open wireless signal and Mom has begun to see my "little machine" as a convenience for her. She has developed a taste for online shopping and YouTube. Both of my sisters have visited with their laptops (a MacBook and a Dell) and I discovered that my eee picked up a good signal when their laptops could not even detect it.
My eee came with a Linux platform (newer models do have Windows XP available). The Linux is extremely easy to use, and a Mozilla Firefox browser comes preloaded, which is what I use anyway at home. Also, I was pleased to discover that the interface with printers is seamless. I installed a Brother MFC (multifunction printer/copier/fax machine/scanner) at my mom's, and one day I decided to see if I could print out something from my eee. When I hit "print", the Linux software on the eee recognized the MFC immediately and printed without a hitch. No troublesome printer drivers to download or install. Yay!
The 701 comes with 512KB of RAM, but I easily upgraded that to 1GB which cost me less than 20 bucks. It comes with a 4GB hard drive, but it has a slot for an SD card, and I tripled my disk space by plugging in an 8GB card. It also has three USB slots, so I can use my thumb drive or plug in a camera cable (though I usually just plug my camera's SD card into the slot on the eee and download photos that way.)
I've had no problem with the 7 inch screen. If I need to see something close up, the eee is so light, I just hold it closer to my face. The keyboard takes a little getting used to, but I found that with a little practice, I could touch type on it. The touch pad is easy to use and though I initially thought I would use a trackball with the eee, I found that I liked using the touch pad better.
The battery lasts for about 2 hours, but additional batteries can be purchased and are fairly compact and light. I usually carry the cable with me so I can recharge it whenever there's an outlet available. I also purchased a non-OEM car charger for it.
My eee has taken a couple of falls from the couch onto the carpet, but survived both times without a scratch (I must stop leaving it on the arm of the couch.)
Please note, on specifications below, I had to select from a pulldown menu that did not offer certain selections for this small notebook. For example, the smallest screen size listed was 10 inches, and I couldn't opt to leave that specification blank, so I selected 10 inches. But really, the screen size is 7 inches. Also, the internal storage wasn't listed, and I chose one at random, again because I couldn't leave that blank. Also, I have not used tech support, and I didn't have the option not to rate them. I don't want to mislead readers, but I could not leave my review without being forced to make certain selections from these pulldown menus.
Please epinions, FIX THIS.
